Beyond the capital
Leave the toll roads and the landscape opens: tea estates, volcanic lakes, and fishing towns with empty morning beaches.
Highland mornings
Areas around Pangalengan and the Dieng approach (further east, but similar in feel) reward early starts. Mist burns off by mid-morning; the light is worth the alarm.
Coast and craft
Southern beaches face stronger surf and fewer crowds. Northern ports still run on fishing schedules. Between them sit woodcarving and weaving workshops open to careful visitors.
Practical notes
Roads can be slow after rain. Book homestays ahead on weekends. Learn a few Sundanese greetings — effort is noticed and appreciated.
